BMW X5 M (E70) V8-4.4L Turbo (S63) Technical Service Bulletin # 340111 Date: 110701
Brakes - Brake Squeal In Low Temperatures
SI B34 01 11
Brakes
July 2011
Technical Background
SUBJECT
Brake Squeal at Low Ambient Temperatures
MODEL
E70 (X5 M), E71 (X6 M) vehicles produced up to 7/19/10
SITUATION
Depending on the driving conditions, the occasional brake squeak and/or squeal is normal. The condition listed in this bulletin can occur during light
to moderate brake applications when first driving off at low ambient temperatures. The noise is specifically related to the front axle brakes.
CAUSE
A combination of individual driving habits~ low ambient temperatures and the compound of the brake material can result in a noise which certain
customers may find objectionable.
CORRECTION
Road test the vehicle to determine the source of the noise. If the noise is coming from the front axle brakes, examine the front brakes to determine
the source of the noise. If the brake pads are not worn out and there is no other cause for the noise (damaged backing plate, debris, etc.), replace the
front brake pads under the terms listed in this bulletin.
Refer to the appropriate Repair Instruction for brake pad replacement:
REP 34 11 000 "Removing and installing/replacing brake linings on both front brake discs (4 pistons Brembo)"
