SUBJECT
Front or Rear Windshield Wipers Fail to Operate
MODEL
E70
E71
E72
SITUATION
One or more of the following situations may occur:
^ The front or rear windshield wipers fail to operate
^ The wipers do not go into the park position
^ The wipers operate slowly or bind
CAUSE
One or more of the following causes can occur:
^ Stiff or binding wiper linkage
^ Junction Box Electronics (JBE) software error
^ Defective wiper motor (internally shorted)
INFORMATION
The following troubleshooting hints are based on known areas that can cause the situations described above to occur.
1. Front windshield wiper failure: perform the following checks only when the front windshield wiper fails to operate. If the rear
wipers fail to operate~ proceed to section 2.
^
Check Fuse F44 (30 A) and replace as necessary.
^ Check connector X333 at the front wiper motor to makes sure it is plugged in correctly, and no corrosion exists at the
connection. Repair as needed.
^ Check the front windshield wiper relay (K37) and replace as necessary.
^ The following faults might also be stored in the JBE with stiff movement or binding:
"0xA6C9 Front windscreen wiper blocked"
"0xA6CA Front windscreen wiper, relay setting 1"
Complete and follow the recommendation of the linked test plans to the faults. Normal operation of the wiper on a wet
windshield takes approximately 1.5 seconds. If the wiper motor or linkage needs to be replaced~ the front windshield
wiper motor relay (K37) must also be replaced (consequential damage).

2. Rear windshield wiper failure: perform the following checks only when the rear windshield wiper fails to operate. If both the
front and rear wipers fail to operate, proceed to section 3.
^ Check Fuse F37 (20 A) and replace as necessary.
^ Check connector X13057 at the rear wiper motor to make sure it is plugged in correctly and no corrosion exists at the
connection. Repair as needed.
Check the rear windshield wiper relay (K91) and replace as necessary. The following fault code might also be stored in
the JBE:
"0xA6CE rear windscreen wiper"
3. Both front and rear wipers fail to operate: perform the following only if both front and rear wipers fail to operate and during
vehicle diagnosis, it is not possible to communicate with the JBE. In this case, other vehicle functions are not working, e.g.,
rear power windows, central locking system and air conditioning. If the wipers are in the emergency operation program (wiper
operation on all the time), continue to section 4.
^ Perform a battery reset.
^ If functionality is restored, program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.47 or higher.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest
software.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop
Technology / Vehicle Programming.
^
If functionality is not restored, follow and complete the ISTA test module "B6135_89100 Supply, junction box electronics
(JBE)."
4. The wipers are on permanently (emergency operation): This normally happens when there is a loss of communication
between the JBE, FRM (Footwell Module) or SZL (Steering Column Switch Center). The following fault code is stored in the
JBE:
"0xC918 No message (wiper operation, 0x2A6), receiver JBE"
^
Follow the recommendations of the linked test plan to the fault.
