SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace the Left and Right Fuel Level Sensor
MODEL
E70 with N52K, N62TU and S63 engines
BMW X5 M (E70) V8-4.4L Turbo (S63) Page 561
E71 with N54, N63 and S63 engines
SITUATION
After refueling, the fuel gauge will display an incorrect fuel level. When this occurs, the fuel gauge shows the fuel level as 3/4 full.
CAUSE
Due to a high proportion of ethanol in the fuel, the internal mechanisms of the fuel level sensors may swell. This may inhibit the movement of one or
both of the fuel level sensors.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
[NEW] This Service Action involves certain E70 and E71 vehicles which were produced from October 2008 to July 2009.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action or Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Service Action, first
check the B-pillar label for code number 633. If code number 633 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number
633 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader.
Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
CAUSE
Due to a high proportion of ethanol in the fuel, the internal mechanisms of the fuel level sensors may swell. This may inhibit the movement of one or
both of the fuel level sensors.
PROCEDURE
Replace the left and right fuel level sensors as per Repair Instructions 16 12 000 and 16 12 001.
IMPORTANT:
Fuel lines may be under pressure!
Use extreme caution when decoupling fuel lines. Use a suitable container to catch the fuel. Wrap or cover the fuel line connection and component
with a shop towel before decoupling to avoid escaping fuel from contaminating surrounding materials i.e., carpet and headliner.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 633. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-417) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 633 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one
because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
